About this workshop

In early April 2027, we are offering a photography expedition to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, deep within the Arctic Circle. We will explore a stark and remarkable Arctic landscape of glaciers, ice caps, and rugged mountains, along with the region’s iconic wildlife, including Polar bears, walruses, reindeer, and Arctic foxes.

Winter expeditions to Svalbard in April are aimed at adventurous landscape and wildlife photographers who want to experience the High Arctic at its most raw and elemental. This is a season of extremes, where biting cold meets quiet, uncompromising beauty, and the wilderness feels truly untamed. With snow and ice dominating the landscape, these expeditions offer a powerful and immersive Arctic experience.

The primary focus of the expedition is Arctic winter light and landscape photography. In early April, light conditions can be exceptional, with subtle blue, pink, and orange tones that shift gently across the snow-covered terrain. While wildlife encounters are generally less frequent than in summer, animals set against the dramatic winter scenery create striking and memorable photographic opportunities.

Polar bears, along with other wildlife, may be encountered on drifting sea ice, fjord ice, or along the shoreline, where their presence within the vast, snow-covered landscape creates powerful and atmospheric images that speak to the scale and remoteness of the High Arctic. Photographing wildlife in Svalbard during winter is a rare and distinctive experience, shaped as much by the landscape as by the animals themselves.

Itinerary

Arrival to Svalbard

Arrival to Svalbard The expedition begins on April 7, 2027. We recommend arriving in Svalbard on April 6 to allow time for any flight delays or delayed luggage. Boarding the ship is scheduled for approximately 4:00 pm (16:00), and taxis are readily available from hotels to the dock. Sea conditions around Svalbard are often calm due to the sheltered fjords, though rougher seas may be encountered when traveling north or south along the western coast of Spitsbergen. Over the course of eight days, we will explore the western fjords of the archipelago, the area accessible by ship during winter. With a crew capable of operating around the clock, we can cover significant distances when conditions allow. Flexibility is essential, and our itinerary will always be adapted to weather and ice conditions to ensure both safety and the best possible photographic opportunities.

Departure from Svalbard

We return to the dock in the evening of April 14, 2027. Guests may remain on board until 9:00 am on the morning of departure, April 15. Flights can be scheduled any time after docking on the evening of April 14.

Flight information

SAS and Norwegian operate flights between Oslo and Longyearbyen. We strongly recommend arriving in Longyearbyen at least one day before departure. This allows time to manage potential delays and provides a buffer in case of lost or delayed luggage. Longyearbyen offers several comfortable hotels, and a range of day tours can be arranged with local operators. We also recommend booking the same airline for both legs between Oslo and Longyearbyen, as weather-related delays or cancellations can affect flight availability. For questions or assistance with international flight planning (flights are not included), please contact us at info@arcticexposure.is

What to expect

Svalbard lies at approximately 78 degrees north, placing you firmly in the High Arctic. Our winter expedition is planned in close response to prevailing weather, sea ice, and light conditions, and flexibility is essential. While a general route outlines the areas we hope to explore, changes to the itinerary should be expected, as conditions can shift quickly at these latitudes. April is a true winter month in Svalbard. Temperatures are low, daylight is returning, and the landscape is dominated by snow, ice, and frozen fjords. Weather can change rapidly, from calm, clear days to wind and blowing snow, and participants should carefully review the provided information on clothing and travel preparation. Wildlife encounters are less frequent than during summer, but highly rewarding. Polar Bears, Walruses, seals, Arctic Foxes, and Svalbard Reindeer may be encountered, often on sea ice, fjord ice, or along the shoreline. Birdlife is limited at this time of year, though a few early-returning species may be present. Some days will involve longer sailing distances through ice-filled waters, while others may be spent in a single area, allowing time to observe, experience, and photograph the winter Arctic landscape at a slower pace.

Locations in Svalbard

Locations in Svalbard Sea ice is the main limiting factor during winter and is commonly encountered at both the southern and northern ends of Spitsbergen. Influenced by relatively warm ocean currents, the waters along the west coast often remain ice-free, allowing access to the western fjords, including Isfjorden, Bellsund, and Hornsund. At this time of year, weather and ice conditions are the primary governing factors, and any journey in Svalbard should be approached as a true expedition, particularly in winter, when conditions can change quickly and plans must remain flexible. Liefdefjorden, a majestic fjord area with large glacier fronts, Polar Bears, numerous bird species, and frequently Beluga and Minke Whales. Hinlopenstretet, which is often frequented by large baleen whales, houses Walrus, and boasts the largest accessible auk colony on a spectacular vertical cliff face. Seven Islands, the northernmost part of Svalbard, a truly spectacular icy home for Walrus and Polar Bears. Places we might also visit are White Island, the easternmost part of Svalbard, as remote as anywhere you will ever get. Bråsvellbreen, the northern hemisphere’s longest ice wall, at this time of year with numerous beautiful waterfalls pouring off it. Edgeøya, a large island offering numerous options for hikes across lush tundra plains, studying flowers, breeding birds, Arctic Fox and Svalbard Reindeer – and often larger mammals too. Hornsund, massive glacier fronts, and dramatic scenery, with colonies of various bird species and Ringed and Bearded Seals dotting the fast-ice, attracting Polar Bears.

The Expedition Ship – M/S Virgo

Our home during the expedition will be the M/S Virgo, a vessel recently refurbished specifically for photography expeditions in the Arctic. The ship is spacious and comfortable, accommodating up to 12 guests and two guides. Originally built in 1976, Virgo has a long working history with the Swedish maritime authorities and is well suited to operating in demanding polar conditions. The ship has nine cabins in total, including three twin cabins and six single cabins. All cabins have private facilities with a shower and toilet, and beds are made up in advance, with bed linen and towels provided. Cabins are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis at the time of booking. Guests booking a twin cabin are asked to list their cabin mate on the sign-up form. Meals are served at set times in the dining area, though flexibility is always maintained when photographic opportunities arise. The onboard chef prepares a varied and well-balanced menu, and special dietary requirements can be accommodated with advance notice. A spacious lounge offers excellent viewing opportunities, as well as space for photo editing, charging batteries, informal talks, or simply relaxing with fellow participants after a day in the Arctic.
