About this workshop

The Faroe Islands Photo Workshop opens the world of the forgotten Faroes. The Faroe Islands are just a short flight from Iceland, yet they’re way off the standard traveler’s radar. Making it ideal for photography. Adrift in the frothing swells of the North Atlantic. This mysterious 18-piece jigsaw puzzle of islands is at once ancient and very modern. In this photo workshop, we will focus on the landscape of the islands and the magnificent Atlantic puffin.

On the Faroe Islands Photography Workshop, you are never more than 5km (3 miles) from the ocean. The wild and green countryside is known for its beautiful and steep mountains. There about 80,000 sheep roam free, almost double the population. It’s also the source of the island’s name Føroyar (Faroe Islands). It is derived from the old Norse and means Sheep Islands. The name was given by settlers in the Viking age when they arrived from Norway in the 9th century. The islands have a rich history dating all the way back to the 6th century AD. The first know settlers were Irish monks who told stories of “Islands of the Sheep and the Paradise of Birds.” Those two things are still true to this day.

The islands are home to 2 million pairs of seabirds, including puffins that nest all over the island. Gannets and the world’s largest colony of storm petrels soar above. The Faroe Islands are undeniably beautiful— green, rugged, and wind-swept.

You can’t go wrong when selecting this Faroe Islands Photo Workshop. The islands’ mountains, waterfalls, valleys, grassy heathland, and steep coastal cliffs provide a magical photography scene. As always, we have our experienced professional photography guides leading this photo workshop.

DAY 2 - 4

After breakfast, we embark on our journey. We will begin by exploring the spectacular landscapes that Vágar and the nearby Islands have to offer. We will photograph the Gásadalur village, which is located on the edge of Mykinesfjørður. The highest mountains on Vágar surround it and have an astonishing panoramic view over to the neighboring island of Mykines. There we will find the Múlafossur waterfall that falls into the ocean. Close by is Lake Sorvagsvatn, often referred to as the optical illusion lake. It appears to be hanging off of a seaside cliff and is a spectacular sight. It is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands and spills out into the sea below via the Bøsdalafoss waterfall.Throughout the Faroe Islands, you will notice several beautiful old fishing villages. We will stop to photograph the quaint village of Bøur. There we will capture the view of the Tindhólmur islet. It’s one of the most photographed locations in the Faroe Islands. From Vágar island, there are connections to the dramatic Mykines Island, which we will visit, weather permitting.

DAY 5 - 7

After the first three days in Vágar, we will move to our next accommodation in the town of Gjógv. We will spend three nights in this charismatic little town and travel from to explore the neighbouring islands. Among the notable locations we will visit is the capital of the Faroe Islands, Tórshavn. Its beautiful old town and harbour. The Norse established their parliament on the Tinganes peninsula in Tórshavn in AD 850. And the Faroes argue that it is the oldest parliament in the world. Also, Kirkjubøur, the southernmost village on Streymoy, and the location of the country’s most important historical sites. The ruins of the Magnus Cathedral from the 1300’s. Saint Olav’s Church from the 12th century, and the old farmhouse Kirkjubøargarður from the 11th century. In 1832, a runestone called the Kirkjubøur stone, dating back to the Viking Ages, was found near the Magnus Cathedral in Kirkjubøur.And finally Saksun. A village near the north-west coast and one of the most picturesque locations in the Faroe Islands. Within the village is a charming church and museum. Initially built in Tjørnuvík, the church was disassembled in 1858, carried over the mountains and reassembled in Saksun. The museum occupies a seventeenth-century farmhouse called Dúvugarður.
