West Greenland Photo Tour

Our West Greenland Photo Tour is a winter adventure in some of the more remote areas in the world. The Photo Tour offers shutterbugs an opportunity to photograph many of the largest Icebergs in Greenland, along with breathtaking Aurora. We set our base in the town of Ilulissat on the West coast of Greenland and set out from their every day, either by boat or dog sledging. The sunrises and sunsets in Ilulissat tend to be magnificent and the big arctic skies are dark enough for the possibility of Aurora. Our West Greenland Photo Tour starts and finishes in Reykjavík giving participants the chance to add a few days in Iceland before or after the main trip.

Ilulissat (formerly Jakobshavn) means “Icebergs” in Greenlandic, the name is drawn from the massive Jakobshavn Glacier that is next to the town. The Glacier calves some 35 billion tons of icebergs into the sheltered waters of Disko Bay and the ice fjord. It is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site on the world’s largest island. In wintertime, the snow cover means that dog sledging becomes a normal way of transport for the local people who hunt and transport fish. Greenland is a vast but sparsely populated with towns and settlements only around the coastline. There are no roads to anywhere except in and around the settlements and the only way to travel is by boat, air, dog sledge and foot.

You may be thinking of extending your stay in Iceland for a few days. If so, we offer our Aurora & Ice Cave Photo Workshop both before & after our West Greenland Photo Tour. Please contact our office at info@arcticexposure.is for more information and a good deal booking two Photo Tours.

Getting to Ilulissat Greenland – West Greenland Photo Tour

There are two airlines who fly to Ilulissat, Air Iceland Connect & Air Greenland.

Air Iceland Connect flies from Reykjavik Domestic Airport, we recommend you go through Iceland, if anything might come up it is easier for us to assist as we are based in Iceland. We can assist you with Flybus Vouchers or private pick up in Keflavik to transfer to Reykjavik. The domestic airport is next to the centre of Reykjavik and a short taxi from a downtown hotel. Flying through Iceland is unquestionably better for participants travelling from North America. Flights to Ilulissat from Reykjavik depart every Saturday.

Air Greenland flies from Copenhagen, Kastrup Airport. Depending on where you flying from this could be a better option. Air Greenland flies four times a week, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday. This means you will need to stay a day or two at a hotel in Ilulissat before meeting up with the group. Please contact the office for assistance if you decide you travel by Air Greenland.
