South Coast & Snæfellsnes Winter Workshop

Our South Coast & Snæfellsnes Winter Workshop focuses on the fantastic winter landscape the South Coast and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula have to offer. The Northern Lights will hopefully grace us with its presence, but as with all our winter workshops, we will do our utmost to get an opportunity to photograph them. You will find many of the more known locations of Iceland on the South Coast along with Ice Caves. We will visit at least one Ice Cave in the workshop.

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is probably best known by photographers for Mount Kirkjufell and its waterfall but offers much more with moving landscapes and an abundance of beautiful seascapes. The Snæfellsnes Glaciers is mentioned as the gateway to the centre of the earth in Jules Verne’s science fiction novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth, but the peninsula is also one of three National Parks in Iceland. The first two days of the workshop will spend here covering the major sights, and at least one sunset and perhaps a Northern Lights show at Mount Kirkjufell.

The South Coast of Iceland is the most visited location of Iceland. Luckily during winter, there are less tourist visiting, but we will always try our best to stay away from the crowds when we possible. We have plenty of local connections and locations to visit so we can take you off the radar but still photograph amazing sites. Ice Caves are on our itinerary, and hopefully, we will be fortunate and see some Northern Lights over Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach.

We start early from our hotel in Reykjavik and drive straight to the great autumn landscape in Þingvellir National Park; we capture the autumn colours in the soft light at sunrise, then we keep on further west to more great autumn colours at some remote waterfalls and farm areas. We overnight in Snæfellsnes for the next two nights.

We visit the famous mountain Kirkjufell and other spectacular locations when we circle the Snæfellsnes peninsula, such as Lóndrangar, Arnarstapi, the Black church at Búðir to name a few locations. Capturing the aurora over mountain Kirkjufell is “The Dream Shot” for many photographers.

DAY 4 AND 5 – South Coast and Vík

After sunrise in Snæfellsnes, we travel to the South Coast to capture some of the more known waterfalls in Iceland, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. The next two nights we’ll stay in Vik, surrounded by great landscape and seascape.

We spend the two days exploring the area around Vík í Mýrdal. Glaciers, Ice Caves and some of the magnificent seascapes and rock formations in the southernmost part of Iceland can be found here. Dyrhólaey, Reynisdrangar and Vík to name a few of the locations.

From Vík we travel further east to Vatnajökull National Park and Glacier Lagoon area, on the way we’ll stop at some mysterious locations such as the moss-covered lava fields in Eldhraun, turf roof churches, Skaftafell and hike up to the Black Falls and glaciers.

South Coast & Snæfellsnes Winter Workshop

After our drive further East on day five get settled at our hotel. The morning after we start the day with sunrise photography on the famous Diamond Beach by Glacier Lagoon. We’ll photograph the area around Glacier Lagoon for the next two days and have many great locations to choose from.

This part of Iceland offers opportunities to photography Ice Caves, glacier lagoons, glaciers, and waterfalls. Hopefully, we get lucky, and the Northern Lights show themselves at least one night.

Further east from the Glacier Lagoon is Mount Vestrahorn, a 454-meter high mountain and an interesting geology site forming of unstratified plutonic rock, mostly gabbro but with some granophyre. East of the mountain is a strange-shaped outcrop called Brunnhorn that stretches out to sea. Vestrahorn is a very picturesque mountain with black dunes in the foreground and a shallow beach with reflections. In winter we can expect a spectacular light on the mountain.
