Around Iceland Winter Photo Workshop
In winter we offer this special photo workshop to some of the most unique and remote locations around Iceland. Glaciers and ice caves in south Iceland, frozen waterfalls and geothermal areas in North Iceland and isolated fishing towns in the east fjords. Some of the locations are only passable with native knowledge and modified 4×4 vehicles. Our locations in North Iceland are known as some of the world’s best areas to view and photograph the northern lights.

ITINERARY AND LOCATIONS: As always in Iceland, we will be flexible and adjusted to weather and aurora activity to make the most out of the tour.
You arrive in Iceland and check into your hotel in Reykjavik, which will already be reserved by your tour operator and included in the price. We meet at the centrally located hotel at 17.00 and go out for a dinner in Reykjavik where we briefly go through the tour itinerary, safety share from your native Icelandic guide and some practical things before we start our adventure in Iceland. If you arrive early in town, you can photograph some of the attractions such as Harpa Concert Hall, Hallgrimskirkja, Sun Voyager or Perlan.
DAY 2 – THINGVELLIR AND VIK
We start early in the morning and travel from Reykjavik to the south coast of Iceland, we start our photography within one hour drive, our sunrise location, which will be Thingvellir National Park. From Thingvellir we travel to the southernmost point of Iceland, Vik. We will stay one night in Vik area, which has many of the most iconic frozen waterfalls and dramatic seascapes in the country, such as Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Reynisdrangar and Dyrholaey, we explore the black volcanic beach Reynisfjara which offers brilliant opportunities for seascape photography with the Reynisdrangar sea stacks and Dyrholaey rock arch.
DAY 3 & 4 – VATNAJOKULL NATIONAL PARK
After our sunrise at the coastline of Vik, we continue east to the glacier area of Vatnajokull. We will be based in a great hotel, with a glacier view and just a few kilometres from the famous Glacier lagoon. For the next two days, we explore and capture glaciers from all angles, even from under the glacier, inside a crystal ice cave. We visit Fjallsarlon glacial lagoon, Vestrahorn mountain. Many different shooting locations allow us to move around as the weather dictates and we can find a worthwhile shot in any direction. Should the Northern Lights decide to make an appearance, our options for foregrounds are truly endless.
DAY 5 – EAST FJORDS
The picturesque east fjords are calling us. We will stop at the more jagged coastal peaks of Eystrahorn and we’ll stop in ample locations to photograph sea stacks, the winding roads and cascading streams down the steep terraced mountains. East fjords are very quiet and isolated in winter, so for this part of the tour, we will feel like alone on the island, except meeting some local farmers. Our hotel is located in an old fishing harbour with spectacular snowy mountain view.
DAY 6, 7 & 8 – MYVATN AND THE MAJOR WATERFALLS
From east fjords we travel to Myvatn, the winter paradise in the north, we capture some winter scenes such as horses and turf houses on our way. We head to the majestic waterfall Dettifoss, where we’ll photograph sunset before we check in our hotel in Myvatn. For the next three nights we’ll stay at the same hotel in Myvatn, and each day/night we go to new locations. Depending on the weather we choose the Lake Myvatn, the geothermal hot springs, or Crater Hverfjall. Myvatn area is the perfect location for aurora photography as there is no light pollution and the options of the reflecting lake and other interesting foregrounds. We take a super-jeep tour up to two of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland, Aldeyjarfoss and Hrafnabjargafoss. These waterfalls are amazing in the winter mood, and quite remote. If we have a downtime in Myvatn area, between sunrise and sunset, we can visit the Myvatn Nature Baths to relax and charge our batteries for the next shooting session.
The Myvatn basin sits squarely on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and many of the interesting sights are volcanic or geothermal features. Last volcanic eruption in Myvatn area was quite recently or in September 1984 in Krafla. The textures and colours of the geothermal areas in north Iceland are phenomenal. When we have a downtime at Myvatn, we can relax in the Natural Baths and charge our batteries for the next long night out photographing Auroras.
DAY 9 – MYVATN AND NORTH COASTLINE
After sunrise and our breakfast at the Myvatn hotel, we head out for our sunrise at Myvatn, or re-visit Godafoss and capture the mighty falls from another angle. We drive the north-coastline and check in our country hotel, then we’ll visit Hvitserkur at sunset.
DAY 10 – NORTH COAST – REYKJAVIK
We capture sunrise at the snowy mountains of the north coast or visit Kolugljufur waterfalls before heading towards Reykjavik. There is a few great photo stops along with friendly Icelandic horses. Our last group dinner will be in Reykjavik.
DAY 11 – DEPARTURE
