On the North Iceland Winter Photography Workshop we focus on Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in some of the most unique and remote locations in Iceland, frozen waterfalls which are only accessible with our modified Super-Jeeps and local knowledge. We photograph geothermal areas, hot springs and volcanic craters and some iconic rock formations on the north coastline. Many of first time visitors to Iceland have already been to the most touristy locations in south-west and glaciers on the south coast of the island, but this workshop takes you to the remote north as a perfect choice to revisit Iceland in winter and photographs some of the less visited vistas. On this tour, we can promise you that many of the locations are quiet and unspoilt, as you’ll feel like nobody has been there before you.

THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS WORKSHOP:

  • Major Waterfalls such as Godafoss (Waterfall of The Gods), remote Aldeyjarfoss and Hrafnabjargarfoss on a super jeep tour.
  • Snaefellsnes peninsula with the famous mountain Kirkjufell, the black church at Budir and less known and even more dramatic seascapes.
  • Hvitserkur (Dinosaur Rock) in Hunafloi.
  • Lake Myvatn with the geothermal hot springs and volcanic craters.
  • Remote locations up north to capture the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).
  • The whole tour we travel on a specially modified super jeep (monster truck) to get to all the remote locations, away from the beaten track.

ITINERARY AND LOCATIONS:
As always in Iceland, we will be flexible and adjusted to weather and aurora activity to make the most out of the tour.

DAY 1
You arrive in Iceland and check into your hotel in Reykjavik, which will already be reserved by your tour operator and included in the price. We meet at the centrally located hotel at 17.00 and go out for a dinner in Reykjavik where we briefly go through the tour itinerary, safety share from your native Icelandic guide and some practical things before we start our adventure in Iceland. If you arrive early in town, you can photograph some of the attractions such as Harpa Concert Hall, Hallgrimskirkja, Sun Voyager or Perlan.

DAY 2 AND 3 – SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA

We start early in the morning from the hotel in Reykjavik, and drive directly to our first shooting location in Snæfellsnes and start our photography adventure. We will spend the next two days, and two nights in Snæfellsnes peninsula, which has many of the most iconic mountains such as Kirkjufell and waterfall Kirkjufellsfoss, mountain Bjarnarhafnarfjall, the black church at Budir, dramatic seascapes such as Londrangar and Gatklettur in Arnarstapi with the view of Snæfellsjökull glacier. We stay at the same hotel for the next two nights.

DAY 4 – VATNSNES AND SKAGAFJORDUR
After our breakfast in Snæfellsnes we travel the north coastline to Hunafloi where the famous rock formation awaits us on the black sand beach of Vatnsnes. We lodge close to the coastline to be able to photograph Hvitserkur in the best possible light. If conditions are good we can also shoot aurora at this location. The north coastline has many interesting farms with turf roofed churches and horses in the field.

DAY 5, 6 AND 7 – MYVATN AND THE MAJOR WATERFALLS
After our Vatnsnes stop, we head further north and capture some winter scenes such as horses and turf houses on our way through the capital of the north, Akureyri. We head to the majestic waterfall Godafoss (Waterfall of the Gods), where we’ll photograph sunset before we check in our hotel in Myvatn. For the next three nights we’ll stay at the same hotel in Myvatn, and each day/night we go to new locations. Depending on the weather we choose the Lake Myvatn, the geothermal hot springs, or Crater Hverfjall. Myvatn area is the perfect location for aurora photography as there is no light pollution and the options of the reflecting lake and other interesting foregrounds. We take a super-jeep tour up to two of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland, Aldeyjarfoss and Hrafnabjargarfoss. These waterfalls are amazing in the winter mood, and quite remote. If we have a downtime in Myvatn area, between sunrise and sunset, we can visit the Myvatn Nature Baths to relax and charge our batteries for the next shooting session. The Myvatn basin sits squarely on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and many of the interesting sights are volcanic or geothermal features. Last volcanic eruption in Myvatn area was quite recently or in September 1984 in Krafla.

When we have a downtime at Myvatn, we can relax in the Natural Baths and charge our batteries for the next long night out shooting Auroras.
